The Pittsburg State volleyball team ended its season with a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-18) loss to Central Missouri in the NCAA II South Central Regional Semifinal on Friday night.
The Gorillas outblocked the Jennies 9.0 to 6.0, but the Jennies had just too much offense to over come. UCM hit .236 for the match to .161 for Pitt State.
Junior Molly Bergkamp led the Gorillas with 13 kills and four block assists. She hit .290 for the match. She was the only Gorilla with double figure kills.
Junior Cassie Wilson led four Pitt State players with double digit digs with 16. Senior Pamela Cartagena and sophomore Tesia Lahm each added 15 digs, while Corrinne Stringer had 10.
Abby Gruenbacher led the Jennies with 13 kills and Allie Huffman added 12. Rachel Fister led all players with 20 digs.
The first set was tight the whole way. Pitt State took an early lead and held on until Central Missouri tied the set at 9-9 and then took a 11-9 lead during a four-point run.
The Jennies never lost the lead and built it as far as four points at 15-11 and 16-12 before the Gorillas fought their way back into the match. The Gorillas tied the match at 21, 22 and 23 before a serving error and an attack error gave Central Missouri the 25-23 win.
The second set saw 15 ties and four lead changes before Central Missouri earned the 26-24 win. The two teams were tied at every point from 16 to 21 before the Gorillas took the lead at 22-21 and then stretched that to 23-21 on four straight kills by Bergkamp.
Central fought back and tied the game again at 23-23.
Another Bergkamp kill put Pitt State up 24-23, but two consecutive Gorilla hitting errors led to the UCM win.
The third set saw the Gorillas lead until Central Missouri tied the match at 13-13. The Jennies then took over the lead and never looked back. Their six-point lead at 22-16 was the largest lead by either team in the match until the final 25-18 score.
Pitt State finishes its season with a 25-11 record, the fourth consecutive 20-win season in school history. Senior Pamela Cartagena finishes her career as the career kills leader with 1,836 kills.
She finished second on the career digs list with 2,259. Senior Emily Vosseler finished second on the career assists list with 3,497.
