Homecoming at Northeast High School started with freshman Jasmine Tindle receiving the crown as queen of the festivities, and that theme of an underclassman showcase continued on field as Oswego rolled past Northeast 37-14.
Oswego (2-2) marched right down the field and scored on their first drive, converting the two points on an off-set extra-point formation.
"We ran the ball like we want to," said Oswego head coach Rod Monroe. "Even though we had a few too many penalties, our offense allowed us to get everyone some game time"
Most of the first half played out in this manner, with the Northeast offense gaining momentum on drives, then stalling because of a penalty or a play for loss. Northeast was forced into third-and-long situations, which often gave Oswego good field position that the Indians converted into four consecutive scores. Viking head coach Phil Hobbs thought that was the key to the game.
"I thought our kids came out and played really hard, but the mental mistakes and penalties really cost us," he said.
However, after the Indians went up 30-0 with 4:35 left in the half, the Vikings were able to end the scoring drought thanks to a 48-yard scramble from sophomore quarterback J.T. Richardson that was capped off with a six-yard run from Tyler Hribrar. The Northeast defense, led by a mass of underclassmen, managed to hold Oswego to only one score in the second half.
"Even though we would like to see these kids play more JV," Hobbs said, "with our numbers you have to put the kids out there, and they are really eager to get that experience."
