Pittsburg State University head football coach Tim Beck announced Monday that assistant coach Larry Garman will assume additional duties as the team’s in-season off-campus recruiter.
Garman, who completed his 11th season as a volunteer coach for the Gorillas last fall, will oversee in-season evaluations at both junior colleges and high schools in 2010.
Garman has served as Pitt State’s tight end coach in each of his first 11 seasons. He still will be involved in active coaching when he’s not on the road, including game duties in the press box for the Gorillas. Graduate assistant Mark Smith will serve as the team’s primary tight end coach.
“We are excited to have Coach Garman expand his role on the staff in this way,” Beck said. “It is important for our coaching staff to have as much contact with the junior colleges and regional high schools as we can year-round. Coach Garman will do a great job in this role, in addition to the traditional duties he will still maintain.”
Prior to joining the Pitt State staff in 1999, Garman served as head football coach at Pittsburg High School for 34 years. During his tenure, he led the Purple Dragons to a 255-84-5 (.749) record, three Kansas Class 5A state titles (1983, 1988, 1990), a state record 21 playoff appearances and 31 winning seasons.
