A pair of Division II players who spent time at Division I schools came up clutch in the inaugural Casino del Sol All-Star Game for the Stripes (West) squad during their dramatic 24-21 win over the Stars (East) Monday night.
Pittsburg State quarterback Zac Dickey, described by the Arizona Daily Star as "hybrid quarterback and running back," gave the Stripes a 17-14 lead on his 2-yard TD rumble up the middle of the Stars' defense, 6:53 remaining on the clock.
Dickey spent a redshirt year at Oklahoma State (2007), a season as quarterback of the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds (2008) and three years in a Pitt State uniform, one year at wide receiver (2009) and two at quarterback (2010-2011).
The Pittsburg native and St. Mary’s Colgan graduate improved his pocket abilities, showed leadership and calm under pressure all season and the Gorillas claimed their first national title since 1991 with a 35-21 win over Wayne State. He made the most of his opportunity to display his wares for pro scouts out in Arizona for the Casino del Sol festivities.
LaMark Brown played three seasons for the Kansas State Wildcats at receiver and running back (2007-2009: 45 catches for 426 yards and three scores; 2008: 412 yards on 118 carries) before ending up at DII Minnesota State, where he caught 31 passes for 405 yards and five TDs and rushed for 98 yards and four TDs in 2011.
On Monday night, Brown caught the game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass from San Jose State signal caller Matt Faulkner with 22 ticks remaining.
