SPORTS ROUNDUP: Frontenac volleyball ends regular season 30-5

The Frontenac Raiders volleyball team ended its regular season 30-5 and clinched at least a share of the CNC League title on Tuesday evening with a triangular sweep of Galena 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) and Riverton 2-0 (25-10, 25-14) at home.

Against Galena, Lindsey Gorham had 26 assists and seven digs. Meghan Winden had 10 kills and nine digs. Paige Badart had eight kills and three blocks. Danielle McBride had 10 digs, nine service points and two aces. Haleigh Fay had nine service points, six digs and two aces.

Against Riverton, Ryleigh McCartney had six kills and four blocks, Badart had four kills, and Winden had four kills and six digs. Gorham had 17 assists, seven digs and five service points. Nayna Fields had 10 service points and four aces. McBride had eight digs.

High school soccer

Playing its last home match of the year, the Pittsburg soccer team defeated Columbus 6-0 on Tuesday. The Purple Dragons utilized a three-prong scoring attack, as seniors Casey Steinmiller, Sean Perkins and Efrain Sales each scored two goals against the Titans.

Middle school football

The Girard seventh and eighth grade teams swept Baxter Springs on Tuesday evening, as the eighth grade won 30-8 and the seventh grade won 47-0.

Trey Eaton scored two rushing touchdowns (20, 62) for the eighth grade and Laike Damman scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kolby Morrison as time expired in the first half. Morrison added a 10-yard run and Drew Davied caught a 2-point conversion pass. The eighth grade completed a 7-0 season and won the CCCJL title.

St. Mary’s Junior High won two games from Southeast on Tuesday. The Panthers beat the Lancers in the ‘A’ game 8-6 and 8-0 in the ‘B’ game.

In the ‘A’ game, Ryan Cedeno scored a 1-yard touchdown run and ran in the 2-point conversion. Chandler Jackson scored for Southeast on a 12-yard run, but the conversion run failed.

In the ‘B’ game, Isaac Bicknell scored the only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run and St. Mary’s added a safety. Logan VanBecelaere and Simon Higginbotham each recovered fumbles.

High school football

The St. Mary’s Colgan freshman team lost 46-14 to Lamar, Mo., on Monday.
Austin Commons scored on a 49-yard touchdown run and a 46-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Hamilton. On the second touchdown, Hamilton connected with Ian Duncan on a 2-point conversion pass.

Play was suspended in the JV game because of the presence of lightning with Colgan trailing Lamar midway through the second quarter.

Junior high volleyball

The St. Mary’s eighth grade team won a league title and ended its year with a 13-3 overall record and 6-0 in league play, by defeating Frontenac 2-0 (25-23, 25-18) on Monday night.
Haley Pace led St. Mary’s with nine service points, followed by Madison Marietta with seven. Haydn Dawson had four and Kylee Duncan three kills.

The seventh grade squad finished its season 7-4 and 4-2 in league. St. Mary’s beat Frontenac 2-0 (25-13, 25-16), led by 14 service points from Regan Tridle and seven by Emily Paterni.

High school cross country

The St. Mary’s Colgan boys claimed a league title at last Thursday’s CNC League meet in Baxter Springs, led by overall winner Jonny Adamson (17:47.53). Freshman Ian Duncan ran third (18:41.03), Noah Myers seventh (19:27.21), Aaron Gouvion eighth (19:30.78), Chandler Bishop 20th (21:06) and Josh Adamson 41st (26:15). Adamson, Duncan, Myers and Gouvion all earned All-League and Bishop CNC Honorable Mention.

Colgan runner Rachel Farmer ran in fourth at the CNC League meet, with a time of 17:19.15. Alex Wachter also earned All-League honors with her 10th place time of 18:03.12. Emily Dickey earned Honorable Mention by running 13th (18:32.18). Chelsea McCall and Ali Noyes finished 34th (24:02.25) and 35th (24:06.47), respectively.
