Pittsburg finished 14th in the Derby Invitational, a two-day event populated by Class 6A and 5A schools which ended Saturday with the Purple Dragons (4A) winning only a pair of third-place medals.

Jeremiah Jones (113 pounds), a two-time state medalist, won his first two matches by pins (Stuart Schafer of Olathe North, Cole Conover of Winfield) before a semifinal loss to Joey Defore of Arkansas City.

Jones dropped into the consolation bracket where he won a 3-2 decision over Schafer and defeated Reno Hughey of El Dorado (17-0 technical fall) for third.

Gershom Avalos (220) took a similar route for his third-place finish: consecutive pins against Adam Swearingen of Mill Valley and Seth Birkes of Wichita South before a loss to Dylan Cox of Arkansas City.

In the consolation bracket, Avalos pinned Gunar Brewer of Garden City and pinned Marcus Walker of El Dorado for third.

In the last Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings of 2012 (Dec. 19), Jones and Avalos were both ranked No. 3 Class 4A at their weights.

HAYS — Fort Hays State won a 29-6 dual over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday, winning eight of a possible 10 matches.

Pittsburg native Derek Koehn (157 pounds) and Columbus native C.J. Napier (141) were part of a five-match winning streak within the dual. Koehn won a 4-3 decision over Nick Stahler and Napier a 5-2 decision over Jimmy Chase.

Koehn owns a 18-4 record this season and won MIAA Wrestler of the Week in December. He was ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II rankings (Jan. 3). Napier was ranked sixth in his class.

Fort Hays State (Kansas) participates in the four-state Central Missouri quadrangular today with the host (Missouri), Ashland (Ohio) and Ouachita Baptist (Arkansas). Fort Hays was ranked 19th in the NCAA-II poll with Ouachita Baptist tied at 10th and Ashland 18th.
