The Pittsburg wrestling team will bring home three medalists from the Class 4A state wrestling tournament at the Salina Bicentennial Center.
Pittsburg senior Gershom Avalos (220 pounds) rebounded from a semifinal loss to Justin Scott of Jefferson West (undefeated at 39-0) to win his final high school match — a first-round pin of Austin Gates of Pratt for third place on Saturday.
Avalos led a Pittsburg team which finished 16th in the overall team standings with 42 points. He finished his senior year 35-7 and his only loss at the state tournament came against state champion Scott.
Pittsburg senior Jeremiah Jones (113) ends his prep wrestling career a three-time state medalist, placing fifth on Saturday.
Jones won his first two consolation bracket matches Saturday — a 4-2 decision over Cameron Miller of Concordia and a win by pin over Justin Pool of Holton.
Jones lost a 9-3 decision to Zane Baugh of Abilene in the consolation semifinals but came back with a win by injury default over a Southeast Kansas League rival, Nick Ornelas of Chanute.
Jones finishes his senior season 37-8 and earned the Purple Dragons 14 team points in the overall standings.
Pittsburg junior Levi Kester (106) took a sixth-place finish, losing three straight matches after winning his first two at the Bicentennial Center.
Kester lost in the semis to Josiah Seaton of Bonner Springs on Friday, then lost his consolation semi match against David Mainus of Colby and lost the fifth-place match against Trae Foreman of Pratt.
Frontenac senior Tanner Craig (138) ended his prep career 2-2 at the state tournament and 37-10 his senior year.
On Saturday, Craig won a 2-1 decision over Christian Zwahlen of De Soto but lost a 4-0 decision to Lucas Lovvorn of Holton in the consolation third round.
Fort Scott led all Southeast Kansas League schools in the overall standings — 59.5 points, good for eighth. Of their six wrestlers in Salina, four medaled: Jerad Heckman fourth at 126, Victor Hughes third at 138, Jacob Durossette fourth at 145 and John Metcalf fifth at 195.
Chanute finished one spot and one-half point behind Fort Scott with 59. Nick Ornelas finished sixth at 113, Adam Cole third at 126, Jared Fiscus third at 145 and Will Divine sixth at 285.
Columbus finished in 15th with 43 points. With only five wrestlers, Columbus was propelled by Taylor Watkins in third at 152 and Gavin Houser in second at 195. Houser alone earned Columbus 22 points.
Prairie View, third at the Pittsburg regional behind Chanute and Fort Scott, finished ahead of both SEK League schools at state with 85 points, good enough for fifth.
Kaleb Konitzer won a state title at 132. Matt Kellerman earned second at 285, Jake Bradley (182) and Case Pemberton (106) both finished third. William Holland took sixth at 145.
Prairie View brought six wrestlers and five of them medaled.
Dustin Reed of Colby (47-0), Aaron Puckett of Bonner Springs (41-0) and Justin Scott of Jefferson West (39-0) finished with undefeated seasons.
