The Pittsburg State women closed out their first weekend of the season with another commanding win in the PSU Tipoff Classic, 80-60 over regional opponent Mary (N.D.) Saturday afternoon at John Lance Arena.
Pitt State never trailed and once again used its depth to its advantage to pull away from its opponent in the second half.
The Gorillas held a 45-33 second-half advantage after leading 35-27 at halftime.
On the second and final day of the Tipoff Classic, 11 Gorilla players reached the scoring column, led by sophomore forward Lizzy Jeronimus and her 23 points.
Jeronimus filled her stat sheet with five rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block. She led not only in points but steals and assists.
Fellow sophomore Hailey Roderique scored a career-high 10 points on 3-6 shooting from the field and 4-7 at the foul stripe. She led Pitt State with six rebounds and had two steals.
Senior center Lauren Brown gave Pitt State three players in double figures with 10 points and she added five rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
Y’Cedria Devers added eight points, three rebounds, and two steals and a trio of Gorillas finished with six points apiece — Drew Roberts, Brigit Hesser (career high for the sophomore from Montezuma, Kan.) and Morgan Westhoff. The Gorillas have scored a total of 177 points in their first two wins, averaging 88.5 points a contest.
Ali Collins and Brittney Dietz each led Mary with 16 points and Shaunna Knife added 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Marauders scored 26 of their 60 total points on free throws.
Pitt State (2-0) plays next against Evangel (Nov. 23) and Avila (Nov. 24) in the Missouri Southern Thanksgiving Classic.
