It was certainly the case of the score did not reflect the overall game.
The Pittsburg State women’s basketball team fell 68-54 to Nebraska on Tuesday night, but the Gorillas trailed by as little as three in the second half.
"We were outstanding with our effort tonight," said PSU head coach Lane Lord. "We improved from the KU game and that is what we wanted to get out of this. We have kids that like to fight.
“We were pressured 94 feet for 40 minutes tonight. That is a great experience for our team and they handled it very well.”
Nebraska was also helped by free throws throughout the game, shooting 23 on the night to just three for Pitt State.
The Gorillas were strong on the glass however, out-rebounding the Division I team by one on the night. Pitt State also hit seven threes in the game, while the Huskers were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc.
Pitt State was led by freshman Drew Roberts with 17 points, 11 of which she scored in the second half.
Junior Bailey Waugh added 11 points, scoring all of her points in the second half. Senior Nicole McCombs added 12 to round out Gorillas in double figures on the night.
Junior Laura Glenn was Pitt State's leading rebounder with seven.
Nebraska also had three players in double figures on the night. Kelsey Griffin led all scorers with 19 points.
Cory Montgomery added 17 and Dominique Kelley scored 14.
The Gorillas were behind by as little as three points, 27-24, at just under four minutes to go in the half.
Pitt State's defensive pressure held the Huskers without a shot from floor for seven and a half minutes from 7:59 to 0:25. The Huskers were able to add to their score with free throws during that time however.
The Gorillas continue exhibition play at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9 when they travel to Manhattan to take on the Kansas State Wildcats.
