The Southeast Lancer boys overcame their sloppy play and 23 turnovers Friday night during a 48-30 Homecoming win over Baxter Springs.
“I thought we were very sloppy with the ball and I don’t think we played up to our ability,” Southeast head coach Steve Taylor said, “but I think this all goes back to the way that we practice. We don’t practice like it’s a game situation. We have a hard time understanding what it takes to practice right to get better for a game and that’s something we’ve got to learn how to do. We’ve got to change the mentality here, especially in practice. We’ll come out and play hard in the game but I firmly believe that you play like you practice and we practice sloppy and I think that showed tonight.”
Southeast led from wire-to-wire and pushed its lead to 28-18 at halftime and 38-22 after three quarters en route to its 18-point win.
Both teams scuffled for the majority of the third quarter.
Southeast sophomore Caleb Biancarelli made a 3 nearly three minutes into the stanza and neither team scored again until Baxter Springs sophomore guard Craig Karnes made a pair of free throws with 1:34 remaining in the third. In the next 92.5 seconds, the Lancers scored seven of the last nine points to lead by 16 headed into the fourth.
Daniel Peak (Homecoming King), Travis Trayer and Biancarelli led a balanced Southeast attack with eight points apiece. Josh Thompson scored all seven of his points in the first quarter and Riley Ulery finished with six points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Ulery proved effective rebounding on both ends.
“I thought Riley played one of his best games in the last couple weeks,” Taylor said. “He didn’t score a lot but he was aggressive on the boards and he got some offensive boards. That’s what we need from him. He’s still a little timid as a sophomore but I think he showed signs of playing a little more physical and getting after it. That’s what we’ve been working on with him. He can go in and dominate. He just has to go out and do it.”
Karnes was the lone double figure scorer for either team with 10 points and Nick Abernathy finished with seven for the Lions.
Southeast improves to 6-6 overall and opens Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League play with a W.

Baxter Springs girls 60, Southeast 39
For three of the four quarters Friday night, both teams struggled when they had the east side goal.
Going west, Baxter Springs built a 16-4 lead after one quarter and 34-13 halftime lead en route to its 21-point win.
The Lions relied heavily on points in the paint and the offensive contributions of senior Nina Spence, junior Aleigh Grimes and sophomore Blake Burns. Spence, Grimes and Burns combined for 32 first half points, mostly scored in transition, on drives and on follow shots.
Meanwhile, the Lancers committed 16 first half turnovers, including nine in the second quarter.
Going west, Southeast fared much better in the third quarter with a 15-7 advantage,
narrowing the Baxter lead to41-28 after three quarters. It was 38-28 on a Maggie Renn basket, then the Lions answered with an old-fashioned three-point play by Burns to close out the quarter.
That was the story of the second half: Baxter Springs had an answer for every Southeast run.
Grimes led all scorers with 21 points, Spence finished with 19 and Burns added 16. The Lions received 56 points from this triumvirate. Spence led Baxter with eight rebounds, six after halftime.
Amy Martin and Tessa Robin led Southeast with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Rachel Bole grabbed eight rebounds for Southeast.
Southeast dropped to 7-5 overall, 0-1 in the CNC. Baxter Springs improved to 7-5, 1-1.
