Hunter education classes offered

Anyone born after July 1, 1957 must complete a 10 hour course in Hunter education before purchasing a hunting license in Kansas.  A hunter education class is being offered in Pittsburg.  The next scheduled class in Pittsburg will be in late March. Class dates are,Oct.,13,15,17(Tue/ThSat.)

Columbus fall basketball league

The fall basketball league will be played at Columbus High School and Central High School. Middle School boys  divisions, 7th and 8th grades. One game played on a weeknights, and two games on Saturdays for a total of 9 games. The 8th grade division will be divided into teams with a maximum of 7 players per team/ 7th grade teams can be school teams with a maximum of 10 players. Begin dates are Thursday, October 22, Saturday, October 24, Tuesday, October 27, Saturday, October 31, Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7. Weeknight games begin at 6 p.m. Saturday games begin at 9 a.m. (won't have to be at the site all day, games will be scheduled based on slots in both divisions). $50 per individual (8th grade) or $350 per team (7th grade). All participants will receive a numbered basketball jersey. The 7th graders may register individually ($50), but 8th graders and 7th grade teams will have first priority. Deadline to register is Friday, October 9, or limited to the first 56 paid 8th graders and the first 8 paid 7th grade teams. YMCA to start girls basketball

The Pittsburg Family YMCA will begin a girls basketball league for 1st through 6th grades on October 24th. Teams will be formed by schools if possible. There will be a 1st and 2nd grade league, a 3rd and 4th grade league, and 5th and 6th grade league. There will be six games played on Saturday's. Sign up by October 5th. Volunteer coaches are needed. YMCA to start 7th and 8th grade basketball

The Pittsburg Family YMCA will begin it's 7th and 8th grade boys basketball program on October 24th. Games will be played on Saturday and teams will be divided so that they are even. YMCA to have volleyball

The Pittsburg family YMCA will have an instructional volleyball league for girls in the 5th and 6th grades, beginning September 19th. The league, which will last for six weeks, will be from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday's. The purpose of the league is to teach participants the basic fundamentals of volleyball and to have fun. Class will be taught by former volleyball players. Those interested should sign up at the YMCA, or call for additional information at 620-231-1100

Southeast high school booster club

The Southeast High School Booster Club is sponsoring their 5th annual 3-man scramble Sunday, August 30. Tee time is 1:30 p.m. Entry fee is $40 per person which includes green fees and cart. Cash prizes; 1st place team $300; 2nd place team $210; 3rd place team $105. This is based on 20 teams with 2 flights. Longest drive and closest to pin contests. Mulligans available for purchase. Pittsbug parks and recreation's aquatic center

The parks and recreation's aquatic center will have new hours beginning August 10. The aquatic center will be closed Monday thorugh Friday, but will remain open on weekends until Labor Day, September 7. The new hours for these weekends will be from 1 pm. to 5 pm. YMCA to hold football clinic

The Pittsburg Family YMCA will have a football clinic August 15th for all participants in it's flag and tackle football programs. You must be registered in the program to participate in the clinic. The clinic, which is at 10 a.m. is at the Pittsburg State football stadium. It will be conducted by the coaches and players fo the Pittsburg State Football team. Girard youth football

The Girard Youth Football program will be having their evaluation night on Thursday, August 13th at the high school practice field.  The third and fourth grade will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by the fifth and sixth grades at 7:00 p.m.  Sign up sheets will also be available.  Remember to get physicals done before the first day in pads.  The first scheduled non-pad practice will be Saturday, August 15th, at 9:00 a.m.

Open karate tournament

Pittsburg Parks and Rec and White's Kenpo Karate will be hosting the Pittsburg open karate tournament on Saturday, August 8th in the St. Mary's - Colgan fieldhouse. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration/check  beginning at 8 a.m. The pre-registration fee for one or all events is $25 for SWAT members or $35 for non members, or $30 for SWAT members and $40 for non members at the door. Hunter education classes offered

Evening on the Links golf tournament

The Girard Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to an “Evening on the Links” Golf Tournament scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Crawford Hills, Girard Municipal Golf Course.  The tournament will feature a two-player scramble for 9 holes. Cash prizes will be given to winning teams, prizes in individual competition for longest drive, longest putt, guaranteed cash prize of $250 for closest to the pin, or a chance to win a $1,000 dollar prize if you are within one foot of the pin on #7 and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize on #3. 

2nd annual bulldogs pups golf tournament

The 2nd annual bulldogs pups golf tournament is Saturday, October 3rd, lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with tee time at 1 p.m, at the Briarbrook Country Club, Briarbrook Drive in Carl Junction Mo. A 4 man scramble. $50 per person/$200 per team, includes lunch, 18 holes of golf, range balls and a cart. Proceeds to benefit the CJ K-3 PTO which helps to provide updated technology equipment for our children's classrooms. Tennis camp for boys and girls

Boys and girls tennis camp, sponsored by Pittsburg High School and Pittsburg Parks and Recreation, will be at the Four Oaks golf course tennis courts July 13 -16. Girls time to start is  6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., and boys from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration is at the Parks and Recreation Department in Pittsburg. Camp is free.

Pittsburg YMCA indoor soccer signups

The Pittsburg Family YMCA will begin an indoor soccer program on September 19th. The program is for boys and girls 4 and 5 years of age. Games will be played on Saturday mornings at the YMCA. The first Saturday will include an introductory clinic to go over basic skills and to review the rules of indoor soccer. Only 30 participants will be accepted. Those interested should sign up at the YMCA by September 3rd. A limited number of participants will be accepted.

Pittsburg YMCA pee wee football signups

The Pittsburg Family YMCA will begin an instructional football program for ages 4 and 5, on September 19th. The program will give instructions on pulling flags, blocking, hand-offs, positions, and good sportsmanship. There will be four games on Saturday's, and there are no practices. The Pittsburg Family YMCA will have a fall soccer league for boys and girls in grades 1 through 6. There will be two leagues. One league is for 1st through 3rd grades, and one for 4th through 6th grades. There will be 6 games played, beginning September 12th. Both leagues will be eight on eight, and the 1st through 3rd grade league will be on a smaller field. Those interested should be signed up before August 21st. Volunteer coaches are needed. YMCA is sponsoring bleacher creatures

The Pittsburg Family YMCA is taking sign-ups for the Bleacher Creatures at Pitt State. The program is being sponsored by the Pittsburg Family YMCA. The Bleacher Creature progam is open to boys and girls ages 5 through 12. Participants will receive free admission to all PSU home games, receive a t-shirt, and participate in other activities during the game. Participation fee is $13.00. Pittsburg YMCA football signups

The Pittsburg Family YMCA football program will begin practice the week of August 24th. Sign ups are now being held and all participants should be signed up by August 21st. The program is divided into flag and tackle. Flag has two leagues, one is for 1st and 2nd grades, and one is for 3rd and 4th grades. Tackle is for grades four, five, and six. Fourth and fifth graders will play in a league together, and sixth graders will play in a separate league. Some fifth grades may be moved up to the sixth grade league. Fourth graders will play flag or tackle. All teams have a maximum number of participants, so sign up early. Volunteer coaches are needed.
