Andrew James "AJ" Cavanaugh

Andrew James "AJ" Cavanaugh, 88, of Goddard, Kansas, died Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Dove Estates in Goddard.

AJ was born on Jan. 23, 1934, to James and Mary Alice George Cavanaugh at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kansas. Mary Alice died six days after AJ arrived. James later married Katherine Simion in 1936.

AJ graduated from Girard High School in 1951, Pittsburg State University in 1957, and served in the Navy during the Korean War. He married Mary Jane Hartog in Girard, Kansas, on June 30, 1956.

AJ was an award-winning agent for the Prudential Insurance Company for 35 years. He was active in many professional, civic, and church organizations. AJ especially enjoyed the organizations where he could help those in need.

AJ was preceded in death by his parents, James Cavanaugh, Mary Alice George Cavanaugh, and Katherine Simion Cavanaugh. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane, and children Chris (Mary Kay) of Goddard, Patty Harrigan (John) of Prairie Village, Mike (Mary Ann) of Pittsburg, and Susan Pavelitz (Steve) of Madison, Alabama, brother Retired Captain USN James P. Cavanaugh (Joyce) of West Seattle, Washington, sister Mary Burghart (Jon) of San Tan Valley, Arizona, ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Thursday, July 7, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Girard, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. There will be a graveside service immediately after mass at the Girard Cemetery.
