Melvin Lee Scales, 84, of rural Pittsburg, passed away unexpectedly at 5:26 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Via Christi Hospital.
He was born July 22, 1939, in rural Cherokee, Kansas, the son of Glen Wilford and Julia Faye (McColm) Scales. He graduated from Crawford County High School in Cherokee, Kansas.
On June 3, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Jo Bournonville at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, she survives of the home.
Melvin recently retired as owner and operator of Scales Excavation which he started in 1971. He really valued the many friends he met over the years through his work. He served on the Southeast USD 247 school board for four years, and 2 terms on the Rural District #4 Water board. In earlier years he enjoyed taking his three boys hunting and fishing. He loved attending their school and sports events as well as watching his grandkids in later years. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons, Danny Scales (Rhonda) of rural Pittsburg, Dennis Scales (Jenette) of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and Mark Scales (Shandi) of rural Pittsburg; Seven grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Maurice Glen Scales and Donald Earl Scales, and a sister, Judy Scales.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, (July 24) at the Brenner Mortuary. Followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Brenner Mortuary with Pastor Kyle Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherokee City Cemetery. The family suggests expressions of sympathy be given to PittNaz Church. These may be given the day of the service or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, l14 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
