PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University Solo & Chamber Music Series, which began in September, will continue with its next concert, a performance by Italian trombonist Peter Steiner, on Friday, Jan. 20.
Steiner, who has been hailed as "a new trombone star within his generation" by the president of the International Trombone Association, is scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall at McCray Hall on the PSU campus.
In 2019, Steiner was honored as a prize winner at the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia. At 23 years old, Steiner was appointed trombonist of the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Philharmonic for the 2016-2017 season. Previously, he served as principal trombonist with the Colorado Symphony for the 2014-2015 season. He has performed as guest trombonist with the Munich Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Steiner began his studies at the Music Conservatory in his hometown of Bolzano, Italy before continuing his education at the Mozarteum of Salzburg (Austria). In 2016 he graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City with a performance diploma. His major teachers and influences include Joseph Alessi, Warren Deck, Nitzan Haroz, and Dany Bonvin.
His debut album, United, was released in January 2017 in collaboration with Hsiao-Ling Lin (piano) and Silver Ainomäe (cello). His second album, Sapphire, was released in July 2019 in collaboration with pianist Constanze Hochwartner. His third album Binary Star, in collaboration with Hochwartner, was released in May 2021. His most recent release is The First Noël, a Christmas Journey, again in collaboration with Hochwartner.

Previous performers in the 2022-23 PSU Solo & Chamber Music Series have included the string trio Black Oak Ensemble, organist Joseph Adam, and a percussion performance by the arx duo. Upcoming performances for the season following Steiner’s will include the award-winning Calidore String Quartet on Feb. 17 and the Boston-based Tapestry Ensemble on March 31.
