Sarah Margaret (Parise) Ferraro, of rural Scammon, formerly Carona, Kansas, died in the early morning of Dec. 25, 2022, at her home at the age of 100 years.
Sarah was born on Sept. 1, 1922. The daughter of Clara (Sacchetta) and Mike J. Parise, she grew up with her two brothers in Mackie Camp 42 and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Sarah graduated from Columbus High School in 1941. To help in the WWII effort, she worked at a local shirt factory after graduation. On Aug. 21, 1946, she married Joe Ferraro at St. Bridgets Catholic Church in Scammon. Joe and Sarah made their home together in Carona for 63 years. Joe preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 2012.
Throughout their married years, Sarah supported Joe in the grocery business in Carona. Her delicious chili brick was a best seller in the fall and winter. Sarah was an active supporter of St. Rose Catholic School and the St. Bridget's Altar Society. She loved to bake, and her meringue pies were sought after at church bake sales and dinners. She also gifted family and friends with her Poticia at Christmas time. Sarah enjoyed her family, her home, her yard, and her flower garden.
In addition to her husband, Joe, Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Clara Parise, and her brothers, Ralph and John.
Survivors include her children, Loretta Scott of Manhattan, Kansas, Joe Ferraro of rural Scammon, and Gina (Patrick) Hale of Fleming Island, Florida; her grandchildren, James (Elise Metzler) Scott of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Sarah (Quentin) Kaufman of Lawrence, Kansas; her great-grandchildren, Andrew and Maggie Scott, and Alexandra, Henry, and Michael Kaufman; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Scammon, with Fr. Jeremy Huser as celebrant. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. The parish rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery in Scammon.
The family would like to thank the staff of Harry Hynes Hospice, especially Nurse Lori Cole and Aide Renee Lomax, for their care and support in helping Sarah end her life's journey at home.
