The St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers opened Class 3A, District 8 play Friday night with a 21-0 win over the scuffling Galena Bulldogs at Abbey Field.

Senior running back Conner Dayton continued his solid year with over 200 yards and two scores. Dayton gave Colgan the only points it needed on the Panthers’ first possession of the game — 50 yards on his first carry, 3 yards on his second carry and 12 yards and a touchdown on his third carry. Dayton had all 65 yards on the three-play scoring drive.

Dayton gained 112 of the Panthers’ 127 first-half yards; senior quarterback Dyson Dechant failed to complete a pass in seven first-half attempts amidst questionable weather conditions for any success in the passing game. Colgan led 7-0 at halftime.

On defense, Colgan limited Galena to 104 rushing yards on 37 carries or 2.81 yards per carry. Trenton Little paced Galena with 72 yards on 20 carries and Logan Johnson added 44 on 10 carries; however, after that, quarterbacks Nick Sivert and Kyler Cook both had negative yardage (combining for -12 yards) and Jacob Helton gained no yards on four carries with a long of four.

The Bulldogs were averaging 216.7 yards rushing per game entering Friday and come out of the Colgan game averaging 200.6 rushing yards.

Galena came in averaging 37.3 points per contest and Colgan shut out the Bulldogs for the first time in seven games. Austin Commons sacked Galena quarterbacks twice and David Misasi recovered a fumble. Colgan lowered its scoring defense to 10.6 points allowed per game.

Colgan built on its halftime lead with TD runs by Dayton and V.J. Piccini. Dayton gave Colgan a two-touchdown lead with a 2-yard run — culminating a drive where Dayton had first-down runs of 19 and 29 yards. Piccini banged in from 4 yards out to close out the scoring with 24 ticks remaining in the third.

Colgan (5-2, 4-2 CNC, 1-0 District) hosts Riverton (4-3, 3-3, 0-1) next Friday at Hutchinson Field. Southeast defeated Riverton 48-22 Friday night; Galena (4-3, 3-3, 0-1) lost its third straight and hosts Southeast next Friday.
