Even a one hour lighting delay could not stop the Girard Trojans.

The Trojans’ district encounter with the Independence Bulldogs was marred by a lightning delay which lasted up to 60 minutes in Girard, but that had no barring on the final score as the Trojans cruised by the Bulldogs, 53-20.

Taylor Lewis got the Trojans on the end zone on the second play of the game on a 58-yard run with 11:07 in the first quarter to make it 6-0.

The Bulldogs could not find a response until the second half.

Quarterback Brayden Johnson scored six more for the Trojans on a 3-yard run up the middle with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

Anthony Scholes kept things going for the Trojans with a 30-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Halfback Courtian Hayes was the biggest threat for the Bulldogs he had numerous carries but his second quarter fumble was recovered by the Trojans. However, that possession would go to waste as Hayes redeemed himself by picking off Johnson inside the Trojan red zone.

Scholes made the game’s biggest play by catching a one-handed touchdown pass for 49-yards with 12 seconds before halftime. Add the two-point conversion run by Johnson and the Trojans’ lead was 27-0 at the break.

Hayes tried to get the Bulldogs back on track with a 50-yard touchdown run with 7:26 in the third quarter. The Trojans had an immediate answer, though, with Scholes returning the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to build a 34-6 lead.

A 22-yard touchdown catch by Mylik George was the Bulldogs’ answer before the game delay started.

Scholes responded with a one-yard touchdown run immediately following the delay and the Trojans would not be stopped the rest of the night.

Girard (6-1, 1-0 Class 4A, District 7) continues its tear and plays on the road next week against winless Parsons.
