Pittsburg State University students got into the meat of homecoming week with the Gorilla Games Tuesday night on the tennis courts south of the Weede Physical Education Building.

The students gathered in force this year, with 33 teams signed up compared to 22 last year, and friends and onlookers lined the fences outside the courts to watch. This year’s theme is “Pitt Games,” and teams competed in games such as Junk In The Trunk, in which team members tossed ping pong balls into tissue paper boxes strapped to another teammate’s rear end; In Your Face, in which teams tossed cheese balls onto teammate’s faces that were covered in whipped cream; water balloon volleyball; a shot put throw/lacrosse catch; and Olympic relays.

The students turned out in bigger droves than usual because the Homecoming Committee decided to up the ante for groups who nominate a king or queen by requiring them to participate in more than one even. And typically held in Tom Lance Arena, the games were moved to the tennis courts because it allows the games to be more messy than they could otherwise be.

“We wanted to do something that pleases the crowd, and food does that,” event co-ordinator Tamara Erdman said.

The new outdoor games were popular among the students, who participated enthusiastically throughout the evening.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” said Kansas City, Mo., sophomore fashion merchandising student Darryl Holland.

Holland’s teammate, Natalie Stephens, a senior merchandising major from Grand Island, Neb., agreed.

“It’s good to get the different groups and clubs together and to be involved,” Stephens said. “The whipped cream event was definitely the most interesting. We had a lot of fun doing it.”

Senior Adrian Blount, a fashion merchandising major from Wichita, said the addition of food and water balloons was a good idea.

“We’re just getting dirty together,” she laughed. “It’s something fun outside of regular meetings and regular business.”

Emely Flores, a broadcasting major from Independence, said she just enjoyed getting involved.

“It’s part of the tradition for homecoming,” Flores said.

He friend, Liz Pavon, an early childhood development major from Monet, Mo., said she thought the whipped cream contest was cool, but that she was glad she didn’t participate in it.

“I’m sure it’s fun for the people if you’re putting on the whipped cream, but probably not so much if you’re on the other side,” she laughed.

The winner of the homecoming week activities, including the spirit art contest — groups painted a miniature concrete gorilla — and the Yell Like Hell cheer and dance competition, will be announced Saturday at Gorilla Village.
