The Pittsburg State Gorillas dropped to 3-6 away from Al Ortolani Field with a 14-8 loss to Fort Hays State on Friday.

It all started promisingly for the Gorillas with a leadoff walk by Ryan Ventura and single by Tory Stoffregen. Ventura and Stoffregen later scored and Pitt State drove Fort Hays starter Nathan Zimmerman from the game.

However, Fort Hays scored seven unanswered to gain control of the contest.

Horace Johnson gave the Tigers the lead on a three-home run and the Tigers used RBI from Shane Wade, Jay Sanders and Kelton Rule to gain their five-run advantage. Rule also scored on a wild pitch.

Pitt State drew to 7-4 with a run on a double play and a Ryan Bilovesky solo home run, his seventh blast of the season.

The Tigers eventually went ahead 14-6 on a three-run homer by Sam Thornton and RBI double by Wade.

Pitt State closed out the scoring with eight-inning RBI by Ian Robinson and Ventura but it was too little, too late for the Gorillas.

The Gorillas (12-10, 9-9 MIAA) have started out a seven-game stretch away from home 1-4 — swept by Emporia State and winning one of three against Fort Hays.

Entering this first extended road stretch of the season, Pitt State pitchers had a collective ERA of 4.31 and that number rose 80 points after five games against Emporia State and Fort Hays.

Bilovesky led the Gorilla offense Friday with three RBI and his career-high seasonal numbers are seven homers and 22 RBI. No. 44 leads the Gorillas in homers and ranks second in RBI.

Leadoff man Ventura scored three runs Friday to raise his co-team high to 24 and he scored five in the series against Fort Hays State. Fellow outfielder Stoffregen shares the team lead in runs scored.

Thomas drove in his team-high 25th run of the season.

Pitt State closes out its road stretch Tuesday against Central Oklahoma.

Four losses in five games dropped the Gorillas from fourth place in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association to tied for eighth with cross-state rival Missouri Southern. Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney, Emporia State and Northeastern State passed the Gorillas in the standings.

Central Oklahoma stands behind the big boys of Missouri Western and Central Missouri. The Griffons and the Mules have combined for three MIAA losses while all the other 13 MIAA teams have lost at least seven conference games.

After playing seven consecutive road games, Pitt State returns home next Friday for a three-game set with Truman State, part of a seven-game homestand with two games against Northeastern State and three games against conference leader Missouri Western.
