The Clothes Closet, located at 103 W. Buffalo, Girard, will mark its seventh anniversary on Sept. 15.
After about a year of planning and location seeking, the doors of the shop were opened on Sept. 15, 2005, by representatives of Girard Christian Women United. This included women from the Christian, Girard Methodist, Farlington Methodist, Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist and Presbyterian Churches.
“During those years it has helped the community with low-cost clothing, providing a comfortable atmosphere for the customers and workers,” said Fleta Rose, president. “And, by donating most of its proceeds to the Girard Ministerial Alliance, it distributes to the needy throughout the year.”
She said that a total of $38,700 has been given to the community through the Ministerial Alliance over the past seven years.
That’s all the more remarkable because the volunteer non-profit thrift shop routinely sells its used clothing and other items for 25 cents or 50 cents.
Rose said that there have been many examples over the years of the store helping people who were unable to afford even these minimal prices.
“One Saturday a young man came in and said he was going to be a best man at a wedding that afternoon,” she said. “We found a pair of tuxedo pants with the shiny stripe down the sides, a white shirt and tie, shoes and socks.”
Another young man came in around noon and said that he needed nice clothing for a school presentation that afternoon. He walked out with slacks, a white shirt, jacket and shoes. His total cost was $1. It’s no wonder that Rose said the workers have received many heart-felt thanks from store patrons. She also has some thanks to pass on.
“I want to thank the community and the Clothes Closet workers for their support,” Rose said.
The Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
