Six Pittsburg High School DECA students participated Thursday at the Blue Valley North West High School Mini-Competition.
Competing were Josh Allmon, Loren Kutz, Stephanie McCabe, Nikki Akoro, Logan Chatman and Adam Hawn.
“This competition was not open to the students working on chapter projects, written events or research events,” said Linda Garrow, PHS marketing/entrepreneurship instructor and DECA advisor. “Only individual series events and team decision-making events were hosted.”
She said that students were required to perform one role play from a situational event with only 10 minutes allowed for prep time, and also respond to a 100-question multiple choice exam as well, in the course of one hour.
“Both opening and closing award sessions were held, and a Wil Jenny’s Mexican Restaurant buffet was served for all students, advisors, chaperones and judges,” Garrow said.
Loren Kutz and Josh Allmon, juniors, competed in the team decision-making event for sports and entertainment marketing.
“We discovered we need to practice even more before the state competition in March,” the two said.
“I’m excited that I’m able to compete as a freshman,” Nikki Akoro said.
Adam Hawn said he thought the mini-competition was good practice in preparing for the state competition, and Garrow agreed with this.
“Mini-Comp is an excellent way for students to get their feet wet, so to speak, before they meet the real judges at the state level,” the instructor said.
PHS DECA plans to take 20 students to the State DECA Career Development Conference March 3-5 at the Marriott on Metcalf, Overland Park.
Whether students place in competition or not, Garrow said that participation in DECA helps make them winners.
“Participation in DECA enhances a student’s preparation for college and career by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, applying learning in the context of business, connecting to business and the community and promoting competition,” she said.
