Amber Moorman, formerly of Pittsburg and now in Buffalo, N.Y., has recently completed a book, “The Survivor’s Game.” Available on Amazon.com as a Kindle e-book, it is a psychological thriller about a husband whose wife has been murdered, and how he copes when he learns her killer is being paroled from prison.

“The Survivor’s Game” is the book that wouldn’t die.

“I started this book many years ago, scraped it, then started it over,” said author Amber Moorman in a telephone interview from Buffalo, N.Y. “Pretty soon I was scratching out a time line, then the story was alive in my head and I felt it should be on paper. Now, after many re-writes, it’s out.”

Right now, though, it’s available on Amazon.com as a Kindle e-book.

“You can read it on anything that can download the Kindle app,” Moorman said. “It  will also be on Nook from Barnes and Noble soon.”

And, eventually, the story will have a print edition as well. Moorman would like to have some available, and maybe even schedule a signing, when she makes a trip back to Pittsburg in September.

She was born and raised here, the daughter of Gene Cunningham, Interstate Extermination, and Shirley Cunningham, who works at Via Christi Hospital. She majored in political science at Pittsburg State University. In 2001 she moved to Buffalo with husband Brian Moorman, punter with the Buffalo Bills, who racked up several records during his time at  PSU, including becoming the first four-time All-American football player in PSU history.

It’s quite a step from political science to writing a novel, but Moorman said that she has always been interested in writing, and for a year wrote “Spotlight” pieces for the “Buffalo News.”

“As a small child I wanted to write, but I thought I  could never write a book because my hand  would hurt  from writing so much,” Moorman said. “Computers took care of that.”

She said that “The Survivor’s Game” takes an  ordinary man and puts him in extraordinary circumstances, traces how he copes with that.

“The first half  is set in a small town that’s based on Pittsburg,” Moorman said. “I don’t call it that, but anybody from Pittsburg will recognize it. A woman is murdered, her killer is  going to be paroled, and how does her husband deal  with that? It’s not really a murder mystery, more of a psychological thriller.”

She said that the book ends with sort of a cliffhanger.

“At first I said I wasn’t going to write a sequel, but couldn’t just leave these characters unfulfilled,” Moorman said. “I’ve got six  chapters done out of about 40 for the sequel.”

She does have other demands on her time, including work as an interior designer for a custom house builder in her area.

“I’ve always bee a closet interior designer, and when  we built our house four years  ago, the builder liked what I was doing and stole me away,” Moorman said.

Another big interest that she and her husband devote much time and love to is the PUNT Foundation, which aids children with pediatric cancer.

“It’s very fulfilling, and heartbreaking at times,” Moorman said.

She enjoys living in Buffalo.

“It’s really a lot like the Midwest,” Moorman said. “The  people are very nice, it’s like a small town inside a big city. The winters here are very long, but other than that, it’s great.”
