Pittsburg Post 64 rebounded from two shutout losses on Thursday with a 13-4 run-rule win Friday over Monett Post 91 and 8-0 run-rule win Saturday over McDonald County in the Carthage Roper American Legion Tournament.
Nine Post 64 players accounted for RBI — Sam Gilbert and Brett Macary led the way with two each, followed by single RBI from Christian Cedeno, Dylan Gromer, Blake Vail, Bryan Wade, Nate Grimaldi, Nick George and Nate George — and eight runs in the sixth busted open a 5-4 game into a 13-4 win.
When the flamethrowing Matt Standlee finds a groove on the mound, he can be dominating at times, posting high strikeout numbers.
On Friday, Standlee fanned eight Monett Post 91 batters in 4.0 innings and reliever Cody Grilz picked up right where Standlee left off, striking out four in 2.0 innings.
Meanwhile, Post 91 starter Jordan Savage scuffled with his control and could not pitch his way out of the sixth inning alive — allowing 13 runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings. Despite throwing 21 first-pitch strikes to 36 batters, Savage hit two batters and tossed four wild pitches.
This scattershot pitching performance, coupled with four errors, resulted in a long day for Post 91. Dillon Bunch drove in three runs for Post 91. Post 91 split a doubleheader with Carl Junction last Monday and Carl Junction shutout Post 64 on Thursday.
Grilz, Macary and Standlee displayed why they are in the middle of the Post 64 lineup on Saturday — Grilz drove in three and Macary and Standlee each drove in two runs.
Joe Wimmer, one of the fastest athletes in Crawford County, showed his speed against McDonald County with a double and three stolen bases, as Post 64 returned to its aggressive form on the basepaths it displayed in the season-opening Wood Bat Tournament. Sam Gilbert, another fleet-of-foot player, added two steals to the Post 64 total of 10 stolen bases.
On the mound, V.J. Piccini and Blake Vail combined for a five-hit shutout — Vail coming on for Piccini in the fifth. Piccini struck out four and Vail (comfortable in his role as a reliever this summer) fanned three.
Post 64 improves to 13-5 overall this season and 9-2 against teams from Missouri (only two losses came on Thursday against Carl Junction and Joplin).
