Three of the four J.L. Hutchinson youth baseball leagues start their postseason tournaments on Monday, concluding play Thursday evening with the championship game of the Ted Carnino League.
Frank German League regular season champion Comeau Jewelry Rockies last dropped a game May 30 and since the calendar moved over to June, the Rockies have not lost a game in six contests, virtually running away with the best regular season record in Frank German play and earning a No. 1 seed.
The Rockies (10-2 overall) average nearly 11 runs per contest (128 runs in 12 games) and have scored fewer than 10 runs only four times.
Of course, given their record, their run totals are higher in June, averaging 12 runs after five straight games of 10 or more against each of the other five teams in the league.
The Via Christi Braves and the Jock’s Nitch Athletics defeated the Rockies in May — 11-7 for the Braves (May 22) and 9-8 for the Athletics (May 30).
The Lindburg Pharmacy Red Sox won a relatively wide-open Ted Carnino race with a 11-1 record, holding onto its undefeated record until the CP Communications Reds used a late surge to upend Lindburg Pharmacy 9-6 in the final regular season game for the Red Sox.
The Red Sox won seven one-run ballgames and one two-run game, reflecting the balance of a league with five teams at least .500 — the Wells Fargo White Sox (8-4), the Reds (8-4), the Meadowbrook Mall Twins (7-5) and the US Awards Yankees (6-6). Seemingly every Carnino team played and lost a close game with the Red Sox — the Yankees lost two one-run games.
The Elks Astros did not lose a game through 12 games of Machine Pitch competition, although the Astros and the T & C Wildlife Rangers played to a 13-13 draw on the first game of the season May 12.
The Astros scored 130 runs in 12 games (10.8 per game) and won six of their games by one run, including a 1-0 win over the Sonic Drive-In Mariners in undoubtedly the lowest-scoring game in the history of machine pitch baseball.
The SEK Surgical Group Angels (8-4) played a pair of tight games with the Astros — 18-17 on May 15 and 10-9 on June 13.
NOTE: The Don Gutteridge League will not have a postseason tournament.
