After two nights of play at the Frontenac Sports Complex, the Girard Little League emerged with a pair of district titles — winning both 9-10 and 11-12 titles on Tuesday night.

Girard 11-12 All-Stars 10, Frontenac 9: For the second consecutive night, Girard won in thrilling walk-off fashion against rival Frontenac on its rival’s home field.

On Monday night, Girard let go of a two-run lead in the sixth only to grind out a 3-2 win in the bottom of the sixth.

On Tuesday night, Frontenac scored a pair of runs in the sixth for a 9-4 lead. Entering its last turn at-bat, Girard only had three hits against Frontenac starter Broc Ginavan. All that changed during the first at-bat of the inning.

Hughes struck out both times during his previous at-bats against Ginavan. Naturally, with Ginavan perhaps a little winded on the hill, Hughes found a pitch more to his liking and cranked it comfortably over the left-field wall. Hughes’ teammates enthusiastically greeted the catcher at home plate.

Against three Frontenac pitchers, Girard collected six more hits and ran the bases against Frontenac with abandon, taking extra base after extra base. Even the lone out proved a productive one — Ethan Goff hit into a 4-3 groundout but Wade Boatman scored the game-tying run on the play.

With one down and Braven Born in scoring position, second baseman Camden McFarland found a hole and punched the game-winning hit through it, scoring Born. Born had the game-winning hit on Monday night.

Frontenac took an early 6-3 lead with big hits including a RBI single by Cal Strand, a three-run home run by Cody Evans and a two-run double by Trevor Moore. Frontenac scored four in the first and two in the second.

Girard claimed its district title by sweeping Frontenac in a best-of-three and heads into state play in Baxter Springs with momentum on its side.

Girard 9-10 All-Stars 20, Arma 1: Leading Arma 3-1 headed into the fourth, it seemed like Girard would have its hands full winning a district title.

That’s when Girard scored 17 runs on eight hits and six Arma errors, changing all that. Heston Kavanaugh (who had a big fourth inning Monday night) alone collected three hits in the inning — he scored the first run of the frame and his two-run double plated runs No. 16 and No. 17. Rigby Born hit a double in an inning difficult to decipher when the hits began and the errors stopped.

Girard defeated Frontenac 15-7 on Monday and ends round-robin play 2-0, district champions. Arma and Frontenac play Thursday night.
