Gus Gorilla has a new pack to hang out with. The Pitt Crew, for youngsters aged 4 to 12, kicked off the season Friday with a gathering at Freddy’s Frozen Custard.
“We decided to develop a new program this year that would encompass all the sports and get the youngsters involved with sports other than football,” said Emily Moses, director of marketing, PSU Intercollegiate Athletics.
She said that youngsters will also be involved with basketball, volleyball and baseball games, with free general admission to all Pitt State regular season home games. Those interested also have an opportunity to serve as a ball boy or girl in volleyball and basketball.
At the opener, Moses and a helper were passing out gear packs that included T-shirts, water bottles, crimson autograph pads and wood coins that could be exchanged for free frozen custard.
Moses said that youngsters and parents will also have a tailgate one hour prior to every home football game. It will be hosted by the PSU family and consumer sciences department.
“We’ve partnered with them to provide some game day supervision, which was something we had community feedback about,” Moses said. “Kari Cronister, director of the pre-school on campus, really stepped up to help out.”
During the tailgate, youngsters can pick up new player cards and have them signed by players after the game. They will sit in the north end zone during the games with volunteer supervisors watching over them.
Mindy Reeves, a PSU senior who will graduate in September, signed up her son, Kaden, 4, for the program. She said she was pleased to be getting so much for the $15 registration fee.
“Kaden can go to the games, to the tailgate and get those player cards,” she said. “He is beyond excited about this.”
Another member of the Pitt Crew is Anna Hogard, 10. She likes sports and plays basketball and softball.
“I like watching the games, and go to football, basketball and volleyball,” she said.
Gus decided to drop by to meet his new pals, and gave a thumbs up to the Pitt Crew.
“Response has been really good,” Moses said. “We’ve registered over 120 kids in just two weeks, and interested people can register their children all season long.”
Community involvement has also been good.
“We’re very pleased that Freddy’s Frozen Custard is our sponsor and proud supporters are Mac Fitness, which will be hosting events throughout the year for all Pitt Crew members, and Jack’s Fireworks,” Moses said.
