Community members got a chance to check out all the fun activities local Girl Scouts get to do at camp Saturday afternoon.
The Girl Scouts held a mini camp at Friendship Fields in Frontenac for the first time. Girl Scouts, potential Girl Scouts and their families spent the afternoon canoeing, fishing, making crafts, taking hayrack rides and learning archery.
“We’ve never done a mini camp before,” said Lori Vinson, a leader in Troop 70328. “The Council thought it was a pretty cool idea. I think I might do this again next year.”
Typically the troop hosts recruiting event each year, Vinson said, but not on this scale.
“It’s more of a community event, rather than just recruiting,” she said, adding that the troop is looking for more leaders. “It’s really been successful. Crafting was really popular and everyone had a good time. Its a nice family event.”
Girl Scout cadet Willow Williams said she was having a blast Saturday afternoon.
“I enjoy the arts and crafts and the archery and canoeing,” said Williams, who brought her friend, Kiera Miller, with her to the event. “We got to help with the paddle boat, too. We’re trying to get some girls rounded up to play some games.”
Miller said she would join Girl Scouts if she didn’t already have so many irons in the fire. Still she joins Williams at events whenever she can.
“My favorite is the crafts,” Miller said. “They’re messy, and it’s fun.”
Pittsburg resident Michelle Marler brought her daughter, Ivoree, 5, to the event to see what the Girl Scouts have to offer.
“I never was in Girl Scouts and I didn’t know what to expect,” Marler said. “It’s enjoyable and it’s been fun. She went on the hayrack ride three times.”
Pittsburg State University student Elly Fox and several other students spent the afternoon helping professor Scott Gorman give the girls archery lessons.
“I actually went to Girl Scouts camps here a long time ago and I thought I could come back and help out,” Foster said. “This is awesome. The kids are really excited.”
And that, Vinson said, is the whole point.
“I’m just glad to see everyone having a good time,” she sad. “That’s what it’s all about.”
