Pittsburg High School kicked off its homecoming celebration in earnest Wednesday night with the annual PowderPuff women’s flag football game and bonfire at Hutchinson Field.

Last year, the junior class won the overall championship, nabbing a 6-0 victory over the sophomores when quarterback Lizzy Willis ran the ball 20 yards on an end sweep for a touchdown to end regulation.
Now seniors, they eked out an 8-0 victory over the junior class — whom they beat as sophomores last year — on another Willis touchdown. With about four minutes left on the clock, Willis took the ball on an end sweep to the right for the score. The seniors then completed the two point conversion.

With a little more than three minutes left on the clock, the juniors put together a drive, completing several passes and getting to about the 40-yard-line before a pass from quarterback Bethanne Elliot was intercepted by senior Cara Hardister in the flat. Hardister took off toward the endzone, but Junior Sarah Jewett tracked her down from behind to save the touchdown. But time had expired and the seniors celebrated on the sidelines.

The sophomores beat the freshmen in a 6-0 win in the consolation game. In the highest scoring game, the seniors beat the sophomores by three touchdowns for a 20-0 win.

After the game, the seniors were jubilant and celebrated in a group on the field.

“It’s amazing,” running back Alycia Pollard said as she moved between the players. “Senior power, dude!”

Junior offensive and defensive line player Emily Ebbs said her team had put in a lot of practice time, and that the outcome of the game was disappointing.

“I really wanted to win,” Ebbs said. “But it’s OK because we played a good game.”
