You’re never too old to take off pounds sensibly.
TOPS KS 0884 had a birthday Thursday for members Thelma Wuerdeman, who turns 90 today, and Velma (Bath) Wehmeyer, who will mark her 89th birthday on Saturday.
“I’ve lost 119 pounds since I joined TOPS,” Wehmeyer said. “I’ve been in TOPS for years and years. I came from Oklahoma, and began there. I was a TOPS leader in Oklahoma for two years.”
She has reached her desired weight and has graduated to KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) status. To remain a KOPS, a person must keep his or her weight no more than three pounds above nor seven pounds below their ideal weight.
“The secret is portion control,” Wehmeyer said. “I haven’t cut any food out, it’s just the amount you eat.”
Wuerdeman said she has been in TOPS at least 10 years, and was a KOPS, but isn’t one now.
“It’s really a challenge to keep the weight off and I gained a little back,” she said. “I’d like to be a little less than I am.”
Wuerdeman enjoys coming to the TOPS KS 0884 meetings, held every Thursday at the Knights of Columbus Towers. Weigh-in begins at 9 a.m., with the business session following at 9:30 a.m.
“TOPS keeps you responsible,” Wuerdeman said. “You come in each week and you’ve got to face that scale. This is a wonderful group of people, so supportive.”
She was born and raised south of Carona, attended high school in Columbus and moved to Pittsburg after her marriage to her husband, the late Orman Wuerdeman.
Wuerdeman said that long life runs in her family.
“My mother lived to be 99 1/2, and I’ve got a long way to go to catch up with her,” she said. “I can’t complain. I’ve had a good life.”
She too said that portion control is a big factor in weight loss.
“You can’t deny yourself everything,” Wuerdeman said. “You’ve got to live.”
Chapter members did live a little, with birthday cake and small cups of ice cream served after the TOPS meeting was concluded.
