The Girard Trojans and the Southeast Lancers both improved to 5-1 on the season Friday with dominating performances on the road — Girard blitzed the Galena Bulldogs 41-12 and Southeast parlayed 34 first-quarter points into a 54-13 rout of the Erie Red Devils.
Girard returned the opening kickoff for touchdown and led 20-0 after one quarter, 26-0 at halftime and 34-6 after three quarters. Galena senior running back Tyler VanCleave, a player who has battled knee injuries over his entire high school career, left the game at one point and did not return.
Girard made a 4-1 opponent look 1-4 and after six games of the season, the Girard defense has allowed 40 points with no opponent scoring more than 14. Galena came in averaging 42.4 points. Not on Friday night, as the swarming Trojans held the Bulldogs 30 points below their average. Galena was the first Girard opponent not to be shut out since Columbus in Week 3 and its 12 points actually increased Girard’s average points allowed from 5.6 to 6.7.
Southeast head coach Clint Rider thought Southeast struggled offensively against Oswego last week, a 44-30 win for the Lancers.
Not against the Red Devils, who entered the game allowing 40 points per game and who surrendered their average by halftime as Southeast led 40-6 at halftime. Southeast boosted its scoring average to 34.2 with its season-high 54-point effort Friday night and the Lancers’ 205 points this season rank second in the CNC behind the 224 scored by Galena.
Girard and Southeast are both secured of winning seasons. The Lancers pass their win total of the last two seasons and reach five wins for the first time since a 5-5 campaign in 2008.
Girard opens its district slate next Friday with its final home game of the regular season, Independence. Independence beat Girard last year in overtime, a loss that helped keep Girard out of the playoffs.
Southeast opens district next Friday against Riverton, offering a matchup between brother head coaches, older brother Derrick (Riverton) and younger brother Clint (Southeast).
