It was a chilly, overcast morning, but runners are a rugged lot. Around 40 of them turned out Saturday for the Everybody Plays 10K, 5K and one-mile children’s fun run.

Runners left from Schlanger Park and headed south. Those participating in the 10K turned at Axe Library, Pittsburg State University, and returned to the park. Persons in the  5K turned and headed back at Jefferson Street.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the multigenerational, universally accessible play space planned at Schlanger Park.

“I don’t always like going out, but it feels good when I finish,” said Carly Twarog, Pittsburg State University biology major. “I just want to give back to the community, and Everybody Plays is a really neat thing.”

Twarog,  who finished the 10K in 43 minutes, 45 seconds, was the top overall winner.

Bill Askew has run 21 marathons in 15 states, and has set a goal of running in all 50 states.

“I started running to quit smoking and never looked back,” he said. “That was 11 years ago.”

There were several other area marathons Askew could have run in this weekend, but he chose the Everybody Plays event because he wanted to help promote the creation of a barrier-free play zone for those with disabilities and persons of all ages.

“People may not realize this, but every time we run, we donate money,” he said. “It’s really nice. We get to do something we love and help the community.”

Following the race was a groundbreaking ceremony for the swing set portion of the space.

“The swing set and the surfacing are funded,” said Kim Vogel, Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department director.

The swings, with Zero-G chairs that provide support for the back and neck, should be installed by spring.

“This will be a nice addition to Parks and Recreation,” said Louann Colyer of the Everybody Plays Committee. “A number of families in Pittsburg will benefit from this project.”

Medals went to race participants. Winners of the children’s one-mile run were Haley McCabe and Bryer Glaser.

Winners in the adult categories were: Women’s 10K, Carly Twarog, first, and Tara Fleck, second, ages 20-29; Penny Wood, first, and Jennifer Russell, second, ages 30-39; and Lisa Blair, first, and Valerie Sweeton, second, ages 40-49.

Women’s 5K winners were: Julie Russell, first, and Jackie Coats, second, ages 30-39; Shirley Williams, first, Kristin Thomas, second, and Susanna Thyer, third, ages 40-49; Barbara Herbert, first, Janet White, second, and Margie Sinclair, third, ages 50-59; and Deborah Potter, first, 60 and older.

Winners of the men’s 5K division were: Miller Coleman, first, 14 and under; David Miller, first, and Bob Coats, second, ages 30-39; Brody Rink, first, Todd Coleman, second, and Randy Cason, third, ages 40-49.

Men’s 10K winners were: Wade Schossow, first, ages 20-29; Thomas Bolding, first, Judd Schossow, second, and John Grayson, third, ages 30-39; Travis Eichhorn, first, Brian Boore, second, and Kevin Sheddrick, third, ages 40-49; Bill Askew, first, ages 50-59; and Murray Balk, first, and Kent Noble, second, 60 and over.
