Pittsburg State junior wide receiver John Brown earned a selection Monday to the American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America Team.
Brown was one of four players selected from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, along with Missouri Western running back and Harlon Hill finalist Michael Hill, Missouri Southern defensive lineman Brandon Williams and Lindenwood defensive back Pierre Desir.
Brown ended his junior season as the PSU all-time leading receiver (124 receptions after two seasons in Pittsburg) and caught 63 passes for 973 yards and eight touchdowns. No. 5 finished with 2,000 all-purpose yards, second in NCAA-II after leading the nation for the vast majority of the season.
Hill established a single-season Missouri Western rushing record with 2,168 yards and finished his distinguished career in St. Joseph as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 4,969 yards and the leading all-purpose gainer with 5,851. He also owns career records for carries (928) and rushing TDs (35).
Hill joins Pennsylvania standouts, quarterback Zach Zulli of Shippensburg and running back Franklyn Quiteh of Bloomsburg, as the final three for the Harlon Hill, which will be awarded Friday. Quiteh rushed for 2,121 yards and 24 TDs in 12 games.
Williams becomes only the third player in NCAA-II history to earn three straight AFCA All-American selections, joining Tywan Mitchell of Minnesota State-Mankato (1996-1998) and Jonas Randolph of Mars Hill (2009-2011).
The much-decorated Williams recently accepted his invitation to the Senior Bowl and he picked up both conference and national Defensive Player of the Year awards for a senior season of 68 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.
Desir made a little history of his own: first Lindenwood defensive player to receive AFCA honors and the first NCAA-II selection for the school. He picked off a MIAA-leading nine passes and led the MIAA with 18 passes defended. Desir, a junior, recorded 60 tackles.
