The sting of a wasp in the dugout between the first and second innings Monday night could not keep Meadowbrook Mall Twins player Gavyn Elkamil away from the field during a Ted Carnino League contest between the Twins and the Citizens Bank Blue Jays.
In fact, he played better after the incident, driving in the go-ahead run and sparking a three-run rally with a triple in the third and closing the door on the Blue Jays in the fifth and sixth innings with five strikeouts.
“That was the best two innings I’ve seen him pitch all year,” Meadowbrook Mall head coach Ron Light told his players after the game before Elkamil led a team cheer. “He found the Gavyn groove and closed it out.”
Meadowbrook Mall gained a 4-1 advantage with a big third inning — Chris York led off with a single but the next two hitters struck out. However, this meant Citizens Bank hurler Matt Moore had to face Elkamil and Elkamil drove one past the Blue Jays center fielder and hustled into third for a triple, easily scoring York running on two outs. Elkamil would score on a wild pitch and Kyle Kubler drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
Citizens Bank came back with two runs in the fourth. Dante Hammond led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch; Tyler Tackett reached on an error and later scored on another wild pitch by Twins pitcher Colby James.
Meadowbrook Mall tacked on a run in the fourth and Elkamil came on in the fifth with his right arm locked and loaded on the strike zone. He struck out the side in the fifth and after Deonte Duncan doubled and worked his way around to put Citizens Bank down 5-4, Elkamil struck out Xander Yartz and Moore, then induced Hammond into a comebacker and Elkamil tossed onto first baseman Michael Zellner for the final out.
Meadowbrook Mall ends its regular season 7-5 and the Blue Jays end theirs at 2-10.
In the late game, the Wells Fargo White Sox run-ruled the Unique Metal Fabrication Pirates 13-0 — highlighted by the performance of Cooper Ratzlaff. Ratzlaff earned the win on the mound and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and home run, plus three runs scored. Cooper Cleland added a double and a triple, scoring two runs for the 7-4 White Sox.
NOTE: Brad Snow came around the various fields Monday night and handed out brochures to an upcoming benefit game for the Tyler Jeck Memorial Foundation. The Joplin Outlaws — featuring Aaron Snow — and the Nevada Griffons — featuring Stuart Jeck — will play at 7 p.m., July 3 at JayCee Ballpark. Adults will be $5 and children $3. All proceeds from the gate will benefit the Tyler Jeck Memorial Foundation.
