Extreme heat that came early this summer has had a dampening affect on the Four State area, and has even warranted excessive heat advisories. But it didn’t affect the turnout at Crawford State Park’s Fourth of July celebration Monday night.

Officials said the park typically gets about 2,000 people for the show when campers as well as visitors are counted, and the lakefront beach was full as usual. Authorities planned ahead for the heat and had EMTs and Crawford County EMS workers on hand.

There are many natives that have made the park their Independence Day home for years, mingling with friends among the live bands, temporary tattoo vendors and food kiosks.

Girard residents Diana and Greg Peak have been coming with Diana’s daughter Carley Bradshaw, for at least 10 years.

“It’s a tradition,” Diana said as her family lounged on lawn chairs. “It’s fun to people watch, and to see people you know.”
Carley said the visuals were a sight to behold.

“The way it reflects off the water is really cool,” she said.

Diana said the shows are well executed for one of the smaller state parks.

“They put on an impressive show,” she said. “It’s safe, family fun.”

Jennifer Duvall moved to Pittsburg from Providence, R.I. for work. She met her now husband, Fort Scott native Brad Duvall, online, and they married on Thanksgiving of last year. They were witnessing the Farlington fireworks for the first time together.

“I heard it was awesome over the water,” Jennifer said.

Brad said he had heard about the fireworks for years but just hadn’t had a chance to go. So far, Jennifer said, the event had been delightful.

“This is awesome,” she said. “It’s not too crowded and the people are nice.”
