Heavy, wet snow that fell through the Tuesday morning hours resulted in the temporary expansion of Pittsburg’s population.

Snowmen sprung up all over the area as children, students, parents and others enjoyed the area’s first good packing snow in a while and the snow day that resulted.

Pittsburg State University Freshmen Ashlyn Hilton and Blake Hamilton spent their snow day shopping and enjoying YouTube videos, and decided to play in the snow during the afternoon.

“It’s a really good packing snow,” Hilton said.

They selected a corner of campus and rolled a snowman, but found themselves having to trek farther and farther to gather snow as they added a body and head to their snowman base.

“We’re running out of snow,” Hilton laughed.

She said she hadn’t seen a good snow in a while and was enjoying the opportunity to play.

“I’m glad I’m here,” Hamilton said, adding that her hometown of Belton, Mo. already had several more inches of snow than Pittsburg, with more on the way.

The National Weather Service forecasts a slight chance of additional snow through Wednesday.

The area’s population of snowmen may find themselves sweating it during the next few days, with forecast daily highs hovering around the freezing mark for the remainder of the week.
