The Pittsburg State Gorillas begin the 2012 season in exactly the same poll location as it ended 2011 — No. 1 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll. The AFCA released its preseason poll Monday.

Pitt State received 21 first-place votes and earned 720 points. No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth finished with five top votes and No. 3 Northwest Missouri, No. 4 Midwestern State (Texas), No. 5 Wayne State (Mich.) and No. 9 Winston-Salem State (N.C.) each garnered one first-place vote.

This is Pitt State’s first preseason No. 1 selection in the AFCA poll since it began in 2000.

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association fields No. 1 Pitt State, No. 3 Northwest Missouri, No. 18 Missouri Western and No. 20 Washburn. Nebraska-Kearney and Central Missouri ended in the “Others Receiving Votes” — Nebraska-Kearney three spots and Central Missouri six spots outside.

Pitt State plays Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western and Central Missouri this season with the latter two games both played at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.

Two schools which finished 2011 unranked — Grand Valley State (Mich.) and Valdosta State (Ga.) — landed in the preseason top 10, Grand Valley No. 7 and Valdosta State No. 8.

Week 1 features three matchups between top 25 teams — No. 6 Colorado State-Pueblo and No. 24 West Texas A&M, No. 11 California (Pa.) and No. 17 Hillsdale (Mich.) and No. 22 Albany State (Ga.) and No. 23 North Greenville (S.C).

All three of the higher-ranked teams play at home.
