PITTSBURG —
The Pittsburg State women shot lights out Saturday afternoon, taking 56 percent shooting overall and 50 percent from 3-point range to the bank for a 78-60 win over Northeastern State at Whetzel Court/John Lance Arena.
During a 65-50 loss to Northeastern State the first time around in January, the Gorillas shot 30.2 percent from the floor and 25.8 percent from deep for the game.
Pitt State found an offensive balance, while their opponent from Tahlequah had one player score nearly half their points.
Lizzy Jeronimus, the official Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association leading scorer, had only two points at halftime but picked up 15 after halftime to finish with 17 points. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.
Lauren Brown matched Jeronimus with 17 points and upped her four with a game-high nine rebounds. Brown finished with four personal fouls but managed to stay in long enough to labor 26 minutes. She grabbed five of Pitt State’s seven offensive rebounds.
Alexa Bordewick shot a higher percentage than Pitt State bigs Brown and Jeronimus and a higher percentage on 3s than non-3s. Bordewick finished 5-7 shooting overall (72 percent) and 4-5 from 3-point land (80 percent). She matched her career high with four 3s.
Morgan Westhoff, instant offense, provided 13 points in 15 minutes and she netted nine of her points on 3-point shots.
Drew Roberts and Brigit Hesser, part of a smaller Pitt State lineup except for Brown and Jerominus, added eight and five points, respectively. Roberts and Hesser also combined for seven assists — Roberts four, Hesser three.
Taylor Lewis of Northeastern State paced all scorers with 29 points — 5-7 on 3s and 8-8 on free throws helped Lewis score 29 in 34 minutes. Sarah Green and Tosha Tyler added nine and eight points, respectively.
The Gorillas own a 15-7 overall record, 9-5 in the MIAA.
Magic at Whetzel Court/John Lance Arena this season: 9-2 at home, 5-1 in conference and 4-1 in non-conference games. The Gorillas have won five straight conference home games since dropping their opener 70-62 to Central Oklahoma back in early December.
In other MIAA games Saturday, Southwest Baptist defeated Lindenwood 68-62, Central Missouri defeated Lincoln 77-62, Washburn defeated Northwest Missouri 61-54, Fort Hays State defeated Nebraska-Kearney 62-50 and Emporia State defeated Missouri Southern 62-55.
The Hornets, the Lady Blues, the Jennies and the Tigers all have impressive win streaks — Emporia State nine games, Central Missouri and Washburn eight and Fort Hays State six.
Emporia State won against Missouri Southern despite a game-high 28 points from Southern forward Erin Rice.
Central Missouri received 26 points and 13 rebounds from Keuna Flax and 22 points from BreAnna Lewis.
