PITTSBURG —
The Kansas State High School Activities Association released substate pairings on Wednesday for Class 4-1A.
Quarterfinal play begins on Monday with eight Crawford County teams hosting Monday and Tuesday. In fact, hosting will be an overall theme all week, since St. Mary’s Colgan (Class 3A) and Northeast (Class 2A) host semifinals and finals.
The Pittsburg boys (10-9) earned a No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Columbus (8-12) at 7 p.m. Monday. The Pittsburg girls (13-6) will play Southeast Kansas League champion and No. 3 seed Fort Scott (14-5) 7 p.m. Tuesday, highlighting a very difficult 4A girls bracket graced by seven teams with at least 12 wins.
The Frontenac girls (16-4) earned the No. 1 seed in that bracket and host Anderson County (7-13) Tuesday, the lone school in the draw with a losing record. The combined record of the eight schools: 104-53 (.662 winning percentage) and Frontenac, Baxter Springs, Fort Scott and Prairie View all won or shared league titles in the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee, SEK and Pioneer.
Of the eight girls substates in 4A, none have a better combined record than the Fort Scott substate: Abilene (80-78, .506), Independence (62-93, .400), Mulvane (73-80, .477), Ottawa (83-69, .546), Pratt (70-88, .443), Tonganoxie (78-75, .510) and Topeka Hayden (96-61, .611).
The Frontenac boys (12-8) host No. 7 Fort Scott (7-12) 7 p.m. Monday.
Girard and Baxter Springs have already played two memorable high school girls basketball games this season and Tuesday night could present a third when Girard (14-6) hosts Baxter Springs (13-6) in a classic 4-5 matchup.
The Girard boys (10-10) host Prairie View (9-11) Monday night.
On the 3A side, the Colgan boys (14-5) earned a No. 2 seed and host Neodesha (5-15) Tuesday night. The Colgan girls (9-10) travel to Cherokee for a 4-5 Monday night showdown with CNC rival Southeast (9-10).
The Southeast boys (7-12) travel down the road Tuesday to face No. 3 Galena (14-6).
The Northeast boys (8-12), substate finalists last year, host Pleasanton (7-11) Monday night in the 4-5 matchup.
The Northeast girls (7-13) face a road trip to play No. 2 seed Sedan (14-6). No Crawford County team makes a longer substate drive than the Vikings: taking the US 400 route, it’s approximately 114 miles and 2 hours, 12 minutes from Northeast to Sedan.
