The most common shape associated with Valentine’s Day is that of a heart, and it is the human heart that will be the main beneficiary of this year’s Valentine’s Benefit Dance, hosted by the Girard Medical Center Foundation.
The eighth annual charity event, to take place Saturday at Celebrity’s in Girard, begins with a social hour and silent auction at 7 p.m., followed by a dance at 8 p.m. The Dan Duling Family Band will provide live musical entertainment.
Proceeds from this year’s event will go toward the purchase of the first of four new defibrillators the foundation has pledged to purchase for GMC this year. Total cost of the four heart-restarting, live-saving medical devices is estimated to be approximately $50,000.
Kenny Boyd, Girard Medical Center CEO, said new defibrillators — which are used in times of cardiac arrest — are needed to replace what has become somewhat outdated equipment.
“Our current technology was nearing the end of its useful life,” Boyd said. “It was the appropriate time to upgrade and standardize our technology.”
Ticket prices for the event are $20 if purchased in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets are available for purchase from the GMC Foundation and at any Girard bank.
Randy Vogts, president of the GMC Foundation, said the event is the foundation’s first major fundraiser of the year and typically brings in “several thousands dollars.” The charity golf tournament, to take place in July, is another major fund-raising event, and the foundation’s capital campaign is an ongoing project.
According to Melanie Cumoletti, the foundation’s executive director and marketing director for GMC, this year’s silent auction offers several items, including a kids outdoor play area, jewelry and teeth whitening kit.
“We really wanted to kick up the silent auction this year, and we got some great stuff donated,” she said.
