Mrs. Julie Spieth, the sponsor for the St. Paul High School Forensics team, felt that this was a successful year and hopes to increase the number of students participating and improve the competitiveness of the team. There were seven students in Forensics for the 2009 season and they were Rachel Thornton, Erin Tuck, Jessica Tuck, Kevin Carpenter, Grant Smith, Cody Phillips, and Rick McAtee. Forensics is mostly about acting and speaking and covers the field of drama in different ways. One can do poetry, a duet with a partner, and also improvise duet acting (IDA) with a partner among the events.
Here at St. Paul High School we had Erin Tuck and Rachel Thornton go to the State Forensics Festival in Wichita on May 2. They performed in IDA and received a rating of II. They did a wonderful job on their performance. Tuck and Thornton qualified to go to State when they went to the Regional Forensic Festival in Neodesha on April 18 where they earned a rating of I. Both State and Regional meets were festivals, which means Erin and Rachel only performed once.
Most of the meets were on Saturdays and you had to perform in front of one to three judges. Some of the meets were in Chanute, Cherokee and a league meet in Uniontown. At regular meets each event performs for three different judges. Based on those scores, you may get a chance to break into finals. Depending on the event, the top one or top two make it to state.
