This year, St. Paul High School's STUCO, or Student Council, is very active in the community. They have many activities or events that they sponsor every year.
Events that STUCO has a tradition of sponsoring are trick-or-treating, the grandparent's Thanksgiving dinner, sponsoring the football and basketball homecoming dances, teacher appreciation week, volunteering in the Christmas program, the penny wars, and community service in the downtown area.
Every year STUCO goes trick-or-treating, and they ask for canned goods instead of candy, which go to less fortunate families that the St. Francis Church, United Methodist Church, and STUCO come together to select, based on needs. They host a grandparent's Thanksgiving dinner for the elementary school grandparents. They cook a Thanksgiving dinner for the children and their grandparents, and they play activities such as bingo. The children and their grandparents always enjoy this event and get to spend quality time together. STUCO sponsors the football and basketball homecoming dances. They are held in the school's cafeteria, which STUCO decorates for the event. A DJ is provided, as well as snacks and beverages. Activities are held for teacher appreciation week to recognize the staff. STUCO volunteers in the Christmas program for the elementary and middle school. “Santa Claus” comes to the program, and the STUCO members volunteer as elves, who pass out candy. Penny wars are held after a wide-spread crisis or tragedy such as Hurricane Katrina or the Greensburg Tornado occur and destroyed people's homes. The students “war” against each class with change and the proceeds go to help towards the damage caused by the tragedy or crisis.
This year STUCO will be doing new activities such as selling bottled water between classes, starting a safety program, planting bushes and trees around the school yards, sponsoring a December assembly, and more to come.
“The growth of the high school has motivated and caused STUCO to get more involved in the community and school,” says Mrs. Harper, sponsor of STUCO. The new school has improved and changed many things for the better this year, and so has STUCO.
