The Standard of Excellence is a recognition awarded by the Kansas State Department of Education annually to an entire building or one or more grade levels within a building. These awards are based on the results of the Kansas Assessments in the academic areas of reading, mathematics, writing, history and government, and science. The criteria for receiving the Standard of Excellence is based upon a building making adequate Yearly Progress and based upon percentages of students in a building or at a grade level scoring in the varying proficiency categories. There are five proficiency levels, exemplary, exceeds standards, meets standards, approaches standards, and academic warning.
In 2009, St. Paul Elementary earned the Standard of Excellence for reading, mathematics, and writing building-wide, and for math and reading at grades three, four, and five. St. Paul Middle School earned the building level Standard of Excellence in mathematics, reading, and writing and was presented with the Standard of Excellence in reading and mathematics at grades seven and eight. Statewide, 2009 saw an increase in the number of awards for reading, mathematics and science. There were 3,717 Standard of Excellence certificates awarded, with 3,043 in mathematics, 576 in science; and 614 in writing.
