ST. PAUL —
The Penny Wars is a form of fundraiser that the St. Paul high schoolers have competed in for the last eight years. It’s hosted by the FBLA club and spans over the course of a few days. Over the days that St. Paul participates, the students fill their class’ tins, and their rival class’ tins, with spare change, with pennies counting as one point to the class and larger denominations deducting points. So the high school students are prompted to fill other cans, rather than their own, with larger denominations of money.
At the end of the fundraiser, all the money is donated to the March of Dimes organization to benefit premature infants. Later, in February, the winning class is rewarded with a pizza party during FBLA week.
Mrs. Meigs, the business teacher at St. Paul High School and FBLA sponsor, said that the most rewarding part of the War is being able to donate to the March of Dimes.
FBLA president, Savannah Smith said, “The Penny War was a big success because we raised money for the March of Dimes!”
The FBLA club prepared by putting together posters to encourage participation, and even went as far to decorate the cans.
This year, St. Paul earned a total of eighty-four dollars and twenty-four cents, which was sent in to the organization.
