PITTSBURG —
St. Paul High School’s annual basketball homecoming spirit week took place from January twenty-eighth to the first of February. The cheerleaders decide all the daily themes, and using some left over from the first spirit week, they came up with Duck Dynasty Monday, Dress Like a Teacher Tuesday, Gender Bender Wednesday, Dress Down Thursday, and the traditional Maroon and Gold Friday.
At the end of the week, after the cheerleaders have judged all of the participants, the winner is rewarded with a candy bar and a pat on the back. While the cheerleaders must participate in every day of the week, since they do the judging, they are not allowed to win any of the days.
Cheer captain Shawlisa Pollman talked about the school spirit, and what they do to increase it, “We do out best to get kids pumped up enough to participate by having days everyone can participate in. We try and come up with new days and encourage students to join in.”
“Our cheerleaders are working to improve school spirit and get kids excited about Spirit Week by getting everyone involved,” cheer coach, Debra Lopez says.
Co-captain Bria Maples, said that her favorite day was Gender Bender, which is where the girls are allowed to dress like guys, and the guys are allowed to dress like girls.
“We have a few students in particular that go all out on the days,” Shawlisa said. “It’s nice to have some people that we can always rely on to get everyone super excited!”
