First graders welcomed 2010 with various activities and lessons, including a celebration of the 100th day of school on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
First grade teachers Cindy Bradshaw, Leah Gottlob, Karen Kukovich, and Beth Towner planned and administered the activities.
To celebrate the special day, students were served one sausage and two pancakes to make the number “100.” They also made necklaces of 100 Froot Loops and worked to collect 100 cans of food, which were given to the Girard Ministerial Alliance.
In science the first graders learned how animals and people adapt to winter and worked on a unit about penguins.
In phonics they read words with “ou” and “ow” sounds while
in math they learned how to add two-digit numbers without regrouping and doubles plus one facts.
Those who celebrated December and January birthdays in first grade were Jacoby Adolph, Dane Augustin, Rigby Born, Lauren Dowling, Zoe Gladson, Sydney Hadaegh, Laural Herlocker, Caitlin James, Avery Johnson, Lara Mallams, Lilly O’Ferrell, Joseph Thyer, and Ethan Warner.
Speech therapist Sherry Boultinghouse has been having her students focus on using correct articulation and language skills in everyday speaking tasks.
“Many speech students have been completing winter carryover activities during therapy with emphasis on remembering to use their previously learned sounds correctly in conversation,” Mrs. Boultinghouse said.
All first graders will go to Greenbush in February to learn about weather exploration.
