Christina Biancarelli, Brock Burnick, Tyler Egbert, Nolan O’Toole, and Austin Price, members of the Girard FFA Chapter, placed first in the National Agricultural Communications Career Development Event (CDE) held in Indianapolis Oct. 21-23.
The team qualified to compete at the national level by winning the State Agricultural Communications CDE, held at Kansas State University in May.
The contest began on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with a team photo followed by an Associated Press Stylebook quiz.
That evening the team gave an oral presentation to a panel of judges regarding a proposal they developed previously. In their proposal, which was developed specifically for this contest, the team described the loss of The Girard Press, the void left by its absence, and how they planned to combat this issue with a free local publication called Community Ties.
On Thursday morning, members competed individually in one of five practicum areas, including web design, graphic design, news writing, press release, and broadcast. Contestants gathered information necessary to complete their tasks from a mock press conference.
Ms. Biancarelli competed in graphic design; Burnick, press release; Egbert, news writing; O’Toole, web design; and Price, broadcast.
Results of the contest were announced at an award luncheon held Friday, Oct. 23, at the Marriot Indianapolis Downtown Hotel.
Girard FFA placed first in the competition, with all members receiving a $1,000 scholarship. All five also received gold emblem awards and medals for their outstanding performances in a field of 155 contestants.
Individually, Price received an additional plaque for placing second while Ms. Biancarelli and Burnick were recognized for placing sixth and tenth, respectively. Egbert and O’Toole placed twelfth and thirty-second, respectively.
As national CDE winners, the team appeared on stage at the final session of the 82nd National FFA Convention on Saturday, Oct. 24, to accept their first-place plaques. The session was broadcast nationally on RFD-TV.
Following their appearance on stage, the team departed from Indianapolis at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday, returning to Girard early Sunday morning.
Advisor Alan Boultinghouse and student advisor Shawn Turner, along with chaperone Gayle Price, accompanied the team.
“I am extremely proud of all of these kids and the hard work they put forth towards this achievement,” said Mr. Boultinghouse. “Without the help of my coworker, my student teacher, the staff, the administration, and the USD 248 Board of Education, our success would not have been possible. This is truly an honor for Girard Schools, our FFA program, and the community.”
Mr. Boultinghouse also added a special thanks to Gayle Price for helping chaperone the trip.
