Nine members of the Girard FFA Chapter attended the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 21-24 with advisor Joe Curran.
Those who went were Travis Allen, Keelie Curran, Zach DeBusk, Kolter DeLange, Kasie Elder, Chad Garrett, Ashley Little, Klay O’Brien, and Sara Schifferdecker.
The group left Wednesday, Oct. 21, on a charter bus with students from the Cherryvale, El-Saline, Marmaton Valley, and Uniontown FFA chapters.
Regarding the group experience, junior Keelie Curran said, “It was fun to meet new people and share experiences with students who have common interests.”
While in Indianapolis the FFA members attended the opening session Thursday and listened to keynote speaker Mike Rowe from Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs,” who emphasized that experiences from the FFA will prepare members for the real world.
Regarding the convention, Mr. Curran said, “The most impressive thing is for Girard FFA members to be in a convention hall with 53,000 other students in blue and gold jackets with similar interests.”
After Thursday’s session ended, members spent the day at the National FFA Career Show, exploring the FFA shopping mall and visiting exhibits set up by hundreds of agriculture-related businesses, colleges, and other organizations.
Friday morning they drove to Chicago where they visited the Museum of Science and Industry and the Shedd Aquarium.
On Saturday they toured the Willis Tower, previously known as the Sears Tower, where they were able to walk out on The Ledge. There are four ledges, each a 10 foot x 10 foot glass chamber located on the west side of the 103rd floor of the Tower.
“It was amazing to look down and see Chicago from that high, but it didn’t scare me,” said sophomore Kasie Elder.
With regard to the trip, junior Chad Garrett said, “It was a really fun, memorable experience.”
