GMS, RVH students participate in spelling bees

The Girard Middle School and Haderlein Elementary School spelling bees took place in January.
Thirty-one middle school students signed up to participate in the GMS Spelling Bee which took place on Jan. 13, and within a few hours, only three contestants remained.
Sixth graders Madison Hey and John Zimmerman and eighth grader Ryan Hisey qualified as the final three contestants.
 Madison triumphed overall by correctly spelling “accomplice” and earned first place in the spelling bee.
John placed second, exiting on the word “jaguar,” while Ryan placed third, getting out on the word “caustic.”
RVH second and third grade students participated in their spelling bee Jan. 14 while fourth and fifth graders competed in their own spelling bee Jan. 15.
Third graders Fisher Mosier and Noah Sanford placed first and second, respectively, while second grader Tricia Combs placed third in the lower division RVH spelling bee.
Fifth grader Eric Wilson won the fourth and fifth grade spelling bee at RVH while fourth grader Ilyanna Knopp took second place and fifth grader Michaela Schettler placed third.
Eric, the overall champion, was the returning champion, having now won five years in a row. He triumphed on the word “orthodox.”
Each of the three top students who placed at both schools will represent Girard at the Crawford County Spelling Bee, which will take place Feb. 5 at Pittsburg High School.
