Early Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, fifteen Girard High School gifted education students and facilitator Linda Knoll left for the University of Arkansas to explore educational opportunities available.
Once there, the group toured the campus, dorm rooms, and admissions office to see if they felt the university fit their needs.
They also discussed Honors College and visited the scholarship office.
Students who went were interested in certain academic programs, including journalism and engineering.
They learned that many types of engineering and many majors are available. One of the most important types of engineering is food science research, which is taught there.
Mrs. Knoll told the group that Girard alumna Kimber Wenzelburger graduated from the University of Arkansas and was chosen as a J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences student speaker at her 2010 graduation ceremony.
“This shows that Girard graduates do well there,” she said.
Students who participated in this trip included seniors Michaela Bauer, Kaleb Belcher, Darcy Boultinghouse, Natalie Duling, Logan Hirst, and Madalyn Smith; junior Ben Coomes; sophomores Bethany Baker, Hayden Bauer, Austin Egbert, Hadyn Herlocker, and Madison Smith; and freshmen Alex Battitori, McKenna Belcher, and John Hey.
Mrs. Knoll said, “I think all the students learned something on this trip.
“The seniors were able to talk to someone about their interests while the juniors were able to see a college that they could attend and possible scholarships. Sophomores, with what is coming around the corner, got a chance to see a variety of programs, including what they can major in, the activities offered, and the size.
“The college is out-of-state and close but also in the South a little bit. The trip was educational for everyone.”
Sophomore Madison Smith said, “It was a really good experience to go learn about colleges, what they want, and how they work.”
