Delanie Freeze of Community National Bank and Olivia Brynds of Evans Motors engaged in a pitchers’ duel for most of their Pittsburg Fast Pitch Association Junior League contest Thursday night at the PSU Softball Complex.
Freeze and Brynds combined to allow one hit over the first two full innings and combined for 10 strikeouts, five apiece. Brynds and Freeze each struck out the side in the second.
Community National finally broke through in the third, taking advantage of consecutive errors by Evans Motors for the first run of the game en route to a 5-0 win.
Freeze continued her roll in the bottom half of the third, running her consecutive strikeout run to six.
Community National scored three runs on three hits and one error in the fourth. With one down, Reagan Burdick roped a triple into left field. She came around to score on a Jenny Denton RBI infield single and then Katie Compton, who scored the first run in the third, provided the big run-producing hit of the contest with a two-run single plating Freeze and Denton for a 4-0 lead.
Caitlyn Burdick showed off her wheels for the fifth and final run in the fifth. She hit a single into right field. She stole second. She stole third and on the same play, she decided why not and stole home as she took advantage of a less than inspired Evans Motors defense.
Freeze recorded 12 of the 15 outs in the five-inning contest by the strikeout. Brynds finished with seven Ks; Community National began making more contact and only went down on strikes twice the final three innings. Still, 19 of the 30 outs Thursday night were strikeout-related.
